Food & Drink
The fishing village of Benagil between Carvoeiro and Porches has a delightful restaurant called Arribas de Benagil. First class Portuguese food, with a touch of Angolan spices. Try the African Moamba, enough for two and should be ordered in advance. In Portimão, walk along the waterfront and pass underneath the bridges. Follow the river to A Perola do Arade. This modern restaurant serves good traditional dishes and you can sit on the terrace at high tide with the water practically lapping your feet, watching the river with the odd train chugging past. Take a trip to Alcalar (just after Alvor) and after visiting the monument, have lunch or dinner at A Fonte da Pedra. It will be full of the foreign residents who live in the area and who know where to eat well. Monte Casal is a restaurant set in the countryside in Estoi with beautiful gardens, quality food and live music to dance to! always a memorable night. In Lagos, Os Arcos is a quiet place to dine away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of the city. Enjoy their cosy décor with a large menu that suits all tastes and most wallets. Choose from fish or shellfish, lots of meat dishes or a Cataplana of clams or lamb ! either is enough for two people. Travelling from Ferreiras to Paderne, there is a village called Mem Moniz where you will find Restaurant Veneza. The food is so good it gets very busy, so arrive early.
Places to go and see
The weather now is still very hot and the beach is still a major attraction. However, there are lots of other things to do if you can tear yourself away. Try one of the many water parks like Slide 'n Splash in Estombar or Zoo Marine in Guia, where there are daily shows with dolphins and other sea mammals. A safari ride gallivanting over the hinterlands of the countryside is great fun. This is a well known golfer's paradise, with so many great courses to play on. A new booking service is provided by Algarve Golf . On the way up to the Algarvian mountain range in Monchique stop off to see the new Omega Parque Zoo for endangered species. The small ticket price will help them to maintain this very worthwhile venture. For shopping, the centre of Portimão or the nearby Alvor are very good. Take home some unusual liquors like Brandy Mel or Amendoia Amarga . And why not enjoy the warm Algarvian hospitality while drinking Medronho (homemade firewater). For a cool evening drink sit out at Smiler's in Carvoeiro or Flic Flac after dinner, and listen to the best DJ sounds at Kadoc in Albufeira. In Vilamoura The Melting Pot is a busy pub, while the Jazz Club draws a more mature crowd.
