French Property/Toulouse

The south west of France enjoys a temperate climate which is warm in the summer and cooler in the winter.

Toulouse is will linked by air, railway and road networks to other French and European cities, with daily flights to Paris (about 1 hour) and others between Toulouse and Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux, Marseille, Brussels, Geneva, London, Munich, Amsterdam, Madrid, Lisbon and Milan. A public bus, which departs every 20 minutes, is available between the airport and the city centre. Toulouse is home to Aérospatiale, the driving force behind Concorde, Airbus and the Ariane space rocket.

Toulouse is formed around a bend in the wide River Garonne with a beautiful historic centre and one of the most vibrant and metropolitan provincial cities in France of inner nineteenth-century boulevards - Strasbourg, Carnot, Jules-Guesde.

The national Space Centre, the European shuttle programme, the leading aeronautical schools, with 110,000 students make it second only to Paris as a university centre

The outer city is formed by the Canal du Midi, which here joins the Garonne on its way from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.

Old Toulouse is effectively quartered by two nineteenth-century streets: the long shopping street, rue d'Alsace-Lorraine/rue du Languedoc , which runs north-south; and rue de Metz , which runs east-west onto the Pont-Neuf and across the Garonne which can be easily walked.

Three excellent museums, Georges-Labit museum for instance, which houses a good collection of Egyptian and Oriental art and the churches of St-Sernin and Les Jacobins and in the magnificent Renaissance town houses - hôtels particuliers.

Place du Capitole is the centre of the city's social scene with many cafés and a huge market on Wednesdays. From place du Capitole there are many medieval streets and further squares, place Wilson, place St-Georges, place de la Trinité and place St-étienne.

The banks of the Garonne have the gardens of the Grand-Rond and Jardin des Plantes (southeast of the city).

Must See

Every year the 'Cloître des Jacobins' welcomes the festival ' Piano aux Jacobins'. This piano festival is one of the city's most major events, with great players taking to the stage almost every evening. The cloister architecture gives the music a special echo and the atmosphere is dreamlike. 4-26 September. Tel. +33 (0) 5 61 22 40 05

Food & Drink

September is still a hot month for Toulouse and you'll certainly want to make the most of al fresco dining opportunities. Une Lune d'Enfer (rue Joubert, Quartier Bonnefoy) has a private garden and an inventive menu of French and North African cuisine. Recently refurbished and offering a completely new menu is Café Garonna (quai de la Daurade), the only restaurant to be housed on a boat on the Garonne river. The view from the upper deck is delightful with the last rays of the sunset casting a glow on the buildings lining the riverbanks. The view is not the only advantage of this restaurant: surprising starters, innovative fish dishes, and desserts that melt in your mouth make it an all round winning choice. Lounge music, soft coloured lights, designer furniture and 'Moon' the Manager provide a warm welcome at Da Vinni (rue Austerlitz). Perfect Italian food is the order of the day here, with risotto, pasta and much more. For something a little bit different, head to the Marché Victor Hugo (place Victor Hugo), a covered market place where you?ll find local specialities fresh from their producers: foie gras, Toulouse sausage, breads, wine and cheese. A wine stall offers a large selection of regional bottles that you can taste by the glass, while Chez Betty is the best cheese stall in the market with its own shop in front of the market building. Head upstairs to the first floor of this market and you'll find ten different restaurants awaiting you. One of them is L'arbre aux Délices (marché Victor Hugo, first floor), which has been around for 17 years and uses only the very best produce on its menu, including black pig from Bigorre and Catalan sausage.

Things to see & do

With more than 70 different ice cream flavours, Le Cornet d'Amour (rue Montardy) is popular with ice cream lovers wanting to cool down on a warm September day. In the same street pop into the Utopia movie theatre. This small cinema is a unique place with only three screens where original films are shown, some in English. On Wednesday and Friday in Musée du Vieux Toulouse (rue du May) a guide will recount the days goneby of historical Toulouse during a guided visit. The Château d'Eau photo gallery (Place Laganne) holds regular expositions in its circular environment; the building is a former water tower and worth a visit. Don't miss your chance to see the exhibition 'Matières d'oeuvres', which will finish on the 21st September. Le Tire Bouchon (place Dupuy) has all sorts of Mediterranean wines and Philippe Lagarde, the manager and a font of knowledge when it comes to talking wines, is on hand to give his recommendations to those looking for something to take home. In the evenings, let the music, rhythm and modern environment provide a relaxing night out at Azucar bar (rue Saint Paul).
