Mazarrón is a town in the land with marine tradition, which looks upon the Mediterranean sea through the port, thus forming, two towns, but just one municipal area, one heart so as to share the history and destination.

The municipal area of Mazarrón is a multi-area with the contrast of agricultural lands and mountains.

The lack of water for the agriculture and salty condition of the little water there is, have made the arid condition dominate in the municipality, in some valleys and mountain areas, the presence of pine trees and vegetation which allow them to retain humidity produced by the sea mist and preserve them as green areas. Nevertheless, for many centuries the municipality of Mazarrón has been described as dry and full of prickly pears. However, the arab writer Ibn Alyasa wrote about those abundant streams of fresh water in all this area of Guadalentin where he was born.

The municipal area of Mazarrón with its protected landscape of the Sierra de las Moreras which occupies a space of 1800 hectares, highlights the silent beauty of its landscape under the subarid Mediterranean climate, with hardly any rain and average temperatures, with steep cliffs, with vegetation ideally suited for the dry climate, typical of southern Spain, in which the Esparto, Thyme, Rosemary, Boja and Palm tree. On the other hand, the dry ravine of Las Moreras attracts large colonies of migrating birds such as wild Ducks, Herons, lesser Egret, Ivis, Avocet, Agujas, etc. In the mountains, we find eaglets, and on the steppe we find Partridges, Quails, Foxes, Rabbits and Hares. In some parts of the municipality we can still find some last colonies of Mora turtle which is on the verge of extinction. The palm trees on the cliffs and ravines give this place a touch of green almost like Africa.

The aridness of the mountains contrasts with the wealth of the sea beds. The variety of its ecosystems and the breathtaking beauty of its landscape make this municipality a unique nature spot in Europe. The functioning of the sea water purifying system is diversifying the agricultural productions; even though, the best agricultural produce is still tomatoes from Mazzaron well known for their quality in Europe and other parts.

The greenhouses with their transparent covers can be seen throughout the municipality but these area in abundance near coastal areas, thus flourishing tourism and thriving agriculture are definitely compatible.

The coast of Mazarron has been submitted to different struggles throughout history, the incursions by the Berbers in the times of christian domination.

This obliged them to construct forts and Watchtowers, which can still be seen along this coast, such as the Tower of Santa Isabel in Azohia, in the center of Bahia de Mazarron, the Tower of Santa Isabel on the hill, above the Port of Mazarron, also called by the name of "Torre Vieja" or the Tower of Los Caballos in Bolnuevo.

The Castle of the Marquis of Los Velez in the center of Mazarron Town, the Molinete and the Castillo del Calentin situated opposite the Marina
